JUDGING UPDATES FOR 2022 COMPETITIONS:
Exciting updates to the judging process for OIL’s 2022 Ohio Invention Convention competitions! A new format allows us to bring back the interaction between judges and students, while still providing the flexibility of reviewing video submissions whenever and wherever.
Volunteers have two ways to participate as a judge: Based on your schedule, you may choose to participate in one or both rounds of judging. All judges must commit to participate in a virtual orientation prior to attending their first judging session (TBD).
Round #1: Also called “Preliminary”:
After virtual judge training, review and score 6 video submissions anytime of the day or week, between April 25- May 14 (no face-to-face with inventors). You will receive an email with your assigned videos.
Volunteers can request grade level ranges, either: K – 5 or 6 – 12th. Anticipate dedicating 3 hours total for this event. As the name “Preliminary” implies, there will be a mix of advanced and very simple inventions from students who are inventing for the first time.
Then, back by popular demand … volunteers will now be able to meet & talk with the inventors during Round #2 of judging.
Round #2: Honda State finals round:
“Zoom Judge Rooms” with inventor presentations will take place in the month of June. Each session will take no longer than 2 hours.
1. Each “Zoom Room” will host 5 -6 inventions, 2 judges, and an OIL rep
2. Inventors will share their invention process & product, then engage in Q & A for a total of 10-15 minutes per invention.
3. Students will leave the room allowing judges to deliberate and submit one final score for each invention (based on the provided rubric) from the team to be submitted in zFairs.
Details regarding specific dates and times will be emailed to you no later than the first week of June. (A variety of day, afternoon, evening, weekday, and weekend times will be available.) You will be able to choose multiple sessions and select grade-division preferences when signing up for exact sessions.
